Lips Oil cans. 2018
With this steel sculpture made of recycled oil cans, Sokari Douglas Camp is addressing the viewers’ environmental consciousness. Once again the focus is on the relationship between nature and commerce, African society and capitalism. The women depicted, dressed in ‘Vierge’ extra virgin olive oil tins, wear bright red lipstick. Using this symbol, the artist underlines how even worldly-wide accepted products are made from crude oil. Sokari’s environmental perception is awake, and through her harmonic and lively art, she seems to push everyone toward a cleared and more real awareness.
