Green Leaf Barrel is one of the most appreciated artworks by Sokari Douglas Camp. The representation of a female goddess of growth and blossoming is bent on a half-opened oil barrel. That’s the inner aim of the piece of art: the focus on environmental conditions in Niger Delta. The artist seems to see in tragic situations a comical spot. The capacity of bringing humor to the world’s issues is one of the features making Sokari an incredible voice of her times. She never gives up on colonialism criticism but she never put irony aside, keeping a positive artistic and social perspective.
