This artwork shows an Iriabo woman. She is dancing as she was deeply connected to the meaning of the Iria ceremony. Many references show an unpredict parallelism between African and Western society and symbols differ according to social perspectives.

Cars Flower Pom Pom. 2019
A truly unique representation of a Kalabari Iriabo woman during the traditional ceremony named Iria. This ceremony is addressed to women who are not married yet and are currently looking for a husband. The woman depicted is holding Agapanthus flowers in her hands, a strong symbolic element that serves the artist’s imaginary for several reasons. The first is about environmental and social denouncement: in Nigerian rural tribes, branches are the emblem of protest. People march while shaking them in sign of objection. The second one refers to the fundamental idea, in Sokari’s art, of African and Western world’s relationship. The same title the artist chooses is a clear confirmation of that: Pom Pom is related to American football rally. Actually, the Iriabo woman is dancing through the pool of flowers and cars around her feet.
A meaningful representation of the human condition opened to diverse social perspectives.
